Name: Alexander Swistak
Email: a.swistak@alexandercollege.ca

Purpose of the project:

Alexander College is looking to recruit an MLIS student from the University of British Columbia (UBC) to participate in our Collections Management as we grow and refine our inventory.
The student will predominantly be assessing Alexander College’s current collection for the following:

  • Outstanding gaps in materials
  • Texts that require weeding

The student will then compose a two page brief on the current status of the collection and provide a list of texts for recommended purchase.

Summary of activities required to carry out the project:

The student will need to be able to commute to both of Alexander College’s Library branches in Burnaby and Vancouver. They will exercise skills learned in LIBR 580 to assist the Librarians in developing the College’s collection.

Much of the work done for this Professional Experience will be remote; however, there is an expectation that the student be able to attend both Libraries as required.

Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:

The student will be able to practice skills learned in LIBR 580 in a practical academic library setting alongside the College’s librarians.

Alexander College will gain insight into our collection along with recommendations for future titles to purchase.

ART 596 – Italian Cultural Centre Museum

Organization
Italian Cultural Centre

Address
3075 Slocan Street
Vancouver, BC, V5M 3E4
Canada

Supervising Librarian/Archivist
Name: Angela Clarke and Alissa Cherry
Email: angelac@iccvancouver.ca

Purpose of the project:

The purpose of the project is to undertake a preliminary organization as well as the arranging and describing of the archive space at the Italian Cultural Centre.

The Italian Cultural Centre has a small archive space which needs to be organized. As well, there needs to be a plan created to arrange, describe and digitize the collection. There are photos, archival documents, ledgers, newspapers and newsletters as well as material culture objects. The collection was brought together c. 2009. Some of the collection has been catalogued but not all of it. What has been catalogued has been insufficient. A plan needs to be created for undertaking the digitization and recataloguing of the collection.

Summary of activities required to carry out the project:

  1. Organization of the storage
  2. The beginning of a plan to digitize
  3. Photography
  4. A plan for how much can be catalogued and digitized in a period of the internship
  5. A decision on the catalogue program utilized
  6. Working with the Museum Curator to develop a plan. Possibly a 5-year plan to catalogue the collection

Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:

It would be an idea to create a standing project with the library school over the next 5 years to have an intern working on this project for 4 months at a time.

Each intern would have a very specific goal such as cataloguing, arranging and describing one shelf at a time. Also, the student could catalogue the items based on their specialization: material culture, photographs, documents, community newsletters.

The items would be photographed and uploaded onto an accessible database.

Time periods in which the project could be supervised:

  • Winter Term 1 (September – December)
  • Winter Term 2 (January – April)
  • Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
  • Summer Session, Term 2 (July – August)

Is there a deadline by which the project must be completed?

It would be a longstanding project for over 5 years.

Considering the project requirements, please suggest suitable coursework as pre-requisite or co-requisite:

  • ARST core courses.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.
