The UBC School of Information supports the goals of truth and reconciliation and UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan. We acknowledge the historical harms enacted by colonial systems of information and their institutional roots in libraries, archives and museums and address these issues in our programs, courses, and research.

As an Indigenous applicant – we welcome you and commit to ongoing work to foster an equitable, inclusive and culturally safe environment for all our students.

Some opportunities for Indigenous applicants and students are outlined below. Please be in touch with any questions you may have (ischool.edsm@ubc.ca).

Application fee waivers/coupons

The School of Information covers the application fee for applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) on their applications.

Before submitting your application to e-vision, email the Educational Services Manager (ischool.edsm@ubc.ca) to request a unique coupon code. That unique code must be entered before you select the submit button on your e-vision application. The unit is not able to offer a refund to those who submit their application without the code. Applicants who apply to multiple programs may receive a coupon from one program but not another.

Priority course registration

Indigenous students pursuing graduate studies at the School of Information have priority course registration during the registration windows in March and June. In order to receive priority course registration, students must self-identify as Indigenous through Workday Student.

Prioritization for entrance funding

Indigenous students are prioritized for Entrance Awards, which are assessed and assigned during the admission process. If successful, you will receive notification from the UBC School of Information at the time of receiving your admission offer.
