Purpose of the project:
Work placements in the 3CV project (Community-centred controlled vocabularies) SSHRC project contribute to catalogue and metadata processes at local libraries and archives. The focus most of the local work is on controlled vocabularies for subjects or name authorities specific to that institution. Some institutions already have local controlled vocabularies and want to have them assessed and revised with community input, while others are seeking to develop or implement a local alternative to standardized tools. This professional experience will connect Out on the Shelves Library to the SSHRC project and facilitate local work on the tag function, especially genre tags and tags on creator identities.
Summary of activities required to carry out the project:
- Review current cataloguing procedures, especially the use of tags;
- Work with OOTS volunteers and leadership to identify subtypes of OOTS tags that would benefit from community input;
- Plan and host community engagement event(s) to solicit input into OOTS tags;
- Summarize input from above event(s) and propose future steps for procedure and vocabulary revisions and additional community engagement approaches;
- Attend 3CV project meetings biweekly. Additional participation in 3CV work could include participation in a half day or day-long workshop.
The project’s grant funding would cover event budgets associated with this tag work. This could include room bookings, food and refreshments, and honoraria for community participants. The work can take place in any iSchool teaching term (Sept-Dec, Jan-Apr, or May-Aug).
The student and supervisor will participate in some project-wide activities including a workshop. The student will be co-supervised by Julia Bullard and will attend some check-in meetings with students working on parallel work placements for other libraries and archives on the project.
Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:
It is expected that this work would continue over a number of such placements, so work plans would include time to document where the project left off and make recommendations on the scope of the next 596 placement.
Time periods in which the project could be supervised:
- Winter Term 1 (September – December)
- Winter Term 2 (January – April)
- Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
- Summer Session, Term 2 (July – August)
Is there a deadline by which the project must be completed?
Work will be ongoing on this project through Summer 2026.
Considering the project requirements, please suggest suitable coursework as pre-requisite or co-requisite:
- Completion of LIBR 509 is required.
- Completion of LIBR 511 and LIBR 514L are recommended.
Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.
