Purpose of the project:

The purpose of this project is to plan and deliver student support programming at the Chapman Learning Commons (Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, UBC Library). The LIBR 596 student would plan programming, particularly for midterm exam season: this can include drop-in sessions such as a crafting study break, tea time, or a session on basic citation/research, time management, how to focus, etc. This programming would be targeted at undergraduate students. There are existing programs that can be modified or adapted, as well as opportunities for new programs to be developed. The idea is to provide both welcoming study break sessions as well as sessions that target key skills for success in university.

Summary of activities required to carry out the project:

  • Developing plan in collaboration with Learning Services Librarian, including how many sessions are feasible to plan within 120-hour timeframe
  • Updating existing programs to ensure they are relevant for our students (updating any slides and materials)
  • Developing any new sessions/programs that align with project goals and LIBR 596 student interests: e.g., pop-up tea library, zine workshop, etc.
  • Creating marketing assets in collaboration with CLC student staff (PALs) and executing communications plan (with support)
  • Delivering sessions with CLC staff support
  • Assessment of outcomes (student feedback survey, observations) and gathering feedback and recommendations for next term

Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:

  • Host: Increased capacity to deliver programs and enable community-building in IKBLC
  • Student: Programming and instruction experience, collaboration in a learning commons environment, event planning experience

Time periods in which the project could be supervised:

  • Winter Term 2 (January – April), with a focus on midterm season in February/March
