Purpose of the project:

Part 1: During this placement, the student will collaborate with the Health Literacy Information Specialist (HLIS) to assess the information needs of specific departments and services with BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre.

Part 2: Using the LibGuide platform, under the supervision of the HLIS, the student will engage potential users and create libguides on specific topics. They will then plan and conduct an assessment for identified user groups and make recommendations for improvements and sustainability going forward.

Summary of activities required to carry out the project:

Part 1: Information interviews: Talking, notetaking, theming, and reporting (~40 hours)

  • Interview on-site contacts and develop use-cases for online guides to library and (where applicable), department- or service-specific information. Consider accessibility and equity needs of users.
  • Explore potential additions to the collection in designated subject areas, to support the information needs of users.
  • Synthesize findings in a brief presentation to on-site collaborators.

Part 2: LibGuide development and sustainability planning (~80 hours)

  • Create libguides on specific topics
  • Assessment plan
  • Assessment and brief report

Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:

The deliverable will consist of planned, implemented and assessed libguides for interested on-site collaborators: the Child Development and Rehabilitation InfoSource, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unite.

Time periods in which the project could be supervised:

  • Winter Term 1 (September – December)

Is there a deadline by which the project must be completed?

No deadline.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.
