Purpose of the project:

The Museum of Vancouver (MOV) currently creates, curates, exhibits, loans, and stores a wide range of digital assets documenting Vancouver’s civic identity and histories. Since 2024, MOV has a been preserving our digital assets through a in-house DAMS comprised of a FileMaker Pro database, Sync cloud storage, an 18TB external hard drive, and Simply LTO-9 tape drive. MOV is now seeking assistance with our annual fixity checks.

Summary of activities required to carry out the project:

Fixity checks will be performed manually by using the original MD5 checksums found in a spreadsheet in each archive bag and comparing them to newly generated MD5 checksums in the annual fixity check spreadsheet to see if files have changed. A variety of equipment and tools will be used including the Terminal App to generate MD5 checksums, and access to the LTO Machine and LTO Tapes, Sync Access Repository, and Annual Fixity Checking Spreadsheet (located in SharePoint) will be required. A comprehensive manual has been written to guide the process.

Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:

With fixity checks completed, the museum will be confident that digital assets are safely preserved and best practices have been followed. At the end of the project, the student will have gained skills and experience carrying out hands-on digital preservation activities using a “home-grown” DAMS in a mid-sized museum setting. These skills would be useful to those interested in the career as a digital archivist.

Time periods in which the project could be supervised:

  • Winter Term 2 (January – April)
  • Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
  • Summer Session, Term 2 (July – August)

Is there a deadline by which the project must be completed?

No deadline

Considering the project requirements, please suggest suitable coursework as pre-requisite or co-requisite:

Coursework in Digital Preservation would be an asset.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.
