I am writing to invite students and alumni from UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies to the exhibition opening of Roedde House Museum’s “Souvenirs of Howe Sound: A History of Local Tourism” on August 19th at 5:00 pm. Could you pass along news of this event to the SLAIS listserv? The exhibition traces the rise of well-known Howe Sound getaways such as Bowen Island, Horseshoe Bay, and the Sunshine Coast, in the context of Vancouver’s colonization and urbanization. Narrated through historical photographs and promotional posters of Howe Sound from the early to mid-twentieth century, the exhibition captures the sense of wonder that early settlers experienced travelling up BC’s stunning coastline and invites reflection on what it means to view the landscape as a tourist.
Curated by SFU alumni Racan Soueidan, The exhibit will feature various promotional materials from the Union and Terminal Steamship Companies from the 1920s – 1950s; postcards and photographs from the early days of Vancouver tourism; Roedde Family photos and memories of summers spent at Horseshoe Bay; and accounts from Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake) and Chief Joe Capilano.
“Souvenirs of Howe Sound” will have a special launch event and open reception on Wednesday, August 19th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. SFU History Professor, Dr. Jack Little will give a special presentation: ‘Views from the Deck: Union Steamship Cruises on Canada’s Pacific Coast, 1889-1958’ at 5:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.
I am sure that some of the students in SLAIS at UBC will be interested in investigating part of Vancouver’s history in a wonderfully restored Victorian house that was once home to the first Vancouver bookbinder, G.A. Roedde.
If you have any questions regarding the event or this invitation, please do not hesitate to contact us at the Roedde House Museum: info@roeddehouse.org or 604-684-7040. We look forward to seeing some of your students and alumni there.
