Rose Garden.Meet Dan Farrell (he/him), a UBC iSchool adjunct professor who is teaching ARST 517 History of Recordkeeping this academic year during Winter Term 2 (January to April 2025)!

Where do you work outside of teaching at the UBC iSchool, and how do you bring your professional experiences/expertise into the classroom?

I recently retired after 15+ years working at the City of Richmond (BC). Most of my career there was as a Records Analyst in a section of the City Clerk’s Office which unified Records Management and Archives. My experience managing current records, both electronic and paper, as well as providing archival services, has given me a broad perspective, addressing the needs of both record creators and users. Recognizing and meeting the practical and ethical challenges posed by recordkeeping is the approach I try to bring to the classroom.

What’s your favourite thing about teaching at the UBC iSchool?

Building up and sharing a body of knowledge with students has really sharpened my own learning and understanding.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I collect vintage office paper punches.
