Empowering Libraries through Consortia

This presentation is part of the iProD series, a professional development series for UBC iSchool students.

Library consortia bring incredible benefits to libraries, and by extension, to the patrons they serve. From discounted access to resources and interlibrary resource sharing to collaborative services and shared technology, these alliances strengthen and enhance library services.

In this presentation, students will dive into the world of library consortia, learning what they are, how they operate, and the myriad ways consortia improve library operations. Attendees will also learn how – as future library professionals – they will work with (and possibly for) library consortia.

Presenters:

Leah Hopton (she/her) is an ardent believer in the power of collaboration. She has worked at the BC Electronic Library Network (BC ELN), a library consortium serving post-secondary libraries in BC, for 12 years and has seen firsthand how consortia bring equity to the sector and empower libraries to do more with less. In addition to her work with BC ELN, Leah is a consultant and facilitator who loves working with libraries and other non-profit groups to collaboratively find long-lasting solutions.

Sameena Sheriff (she/her) is an MLIS student at the UBC School of Information and a student librarian at BC ELN. She staffs the AskAway admin centre and chat reference service. Her interests include instruction, information literacy, and new media. In addition to her work and studies, she is a co-founder of Maktaba El-Yasmin, a community library at UBC that curates resources and hosts events focused on the Middle East and North Africa.
