Purpose of the project:
The UBC Library uses the Archive-it subscription service from the Internet Archive in order to support collecting, preserving, and providing access to our institutional web content, and at-risk sites. More about our web archiving service can be found in our LibGuide.
This project will allow interested students to contribute to the development of the Library’s collections pertaining to the upcoming 2024 provincial elections, while developing their knowledge of web archiving standards and practices through other related topics to be determined by the student and supervisor.
*Note that applications for this project will be considered on an incoming basis, and applicants will be contacted after August 12th.
Summary of activities required to carry out the project:
While the exact activities of the project will depend on the strengths and interests of the student as well as the needs of the project, activities will include:
- Review and complete the self-directed training modules on web archiving developed by the UBC Library and Archive-it.
- Using Archive-it, and potentially other open-source web archiving sources, perform the technical processes to capture websites relevant to the 2024 provincial elections including social media accounts, candidate and party platform websites, and government information.
- Manage quality assurance workflows for the web archiving process.
- Develop metadata for the archived web content.
Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:
At the end of the project, the student should have attained knowledge in web archiving standards and practices, and contributed to the development of the web archiving collections as agreed to by the student and supervisor.
Time periods in which the project could be supervised:
- Winter Term 1 (September – December)
