UBC Library Indigenous Internship Program

UBC School of Information and UBC Library are pleased to offer the UBC Library Indigenous Internship Program, which offers First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) students the opportunity to contribute to UBC Library while pursuing graduate studies at UBC’s School of Information.

This two-year internship combines academic study with hands-on learning at Xwi7xwa Library, UBC’s Indigenous-focused library branch. The program aims to support the growth of Indigenous representation in the library and information professions, foster the professional growth of students, and strengthen UBC’s commitment to reconciliation.

Program Features

  • Paid part-time position at Xwi7xwa Library (up to 10 hours/week, maximum 300 hours September–April)
  • Full tuition coverage for one year full-time in either
    • Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS)
    • Dual Master of Archival Studies and Library and Information Studies (MAS/LIS)
  • Work duties tailored to interns’ interests and Xwi7xwa Library’s needs, which may include:
    • Public service and community engagement
    • Research and project work
    • Archival arrangement and description
    • Metadata creation and enhancement

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Self-identify as First Nations, Métis, or Inuit (FNMI)
  • Be a prospective or currently enrolled student in the MLIS or DUAL program; prospective students will receive priority consideration.
  • Meet the eligibility requirements for UBC Work Learn positions
  • Remain in good academic standing throughout the duration of the internship and program of study

Application Process

Applicants must complete the application form. The following documents will be required:

  • a cover letter articulating one’s interests, professional and academic capacity, and anticipated contributions to the library and information professions
  • an Indigenous citizenship / kinship statement
  • Curriculum vitae
  • the name and contact information of a referee
