Purpose of the project:
Alexander College is looking to recruit an MLIS student from the University of British Columbia (UBC) to participate in our Collections Management as we grow and refine our inventory.
The student will predominantly be assessing Alexander College’s current collection for the following:
- Outstanding gaps in materials
- Texts that require weeding
The student will then compose a two page brief on the current status of the collection and provide a list of texts for recommended purchase.
Summary of activities required to carry out the project:
The student will need to be able to commute to both of Alexander College’s Library branches in Burnaby and Vancouver. They will exercise skills learned in LIBR 580 to assist the Librarians in developing the College’s collection.
Much of the work done for this Professional Experience will be remote; however, there is an expectation that the student be able to attend both Libraries as required.
Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:
The student will be able to practice skills learned in LIBR 580 in a practical academic library setting alongside the College’s librarians.
Alexander College will gain insight into our collection along with recommendations for future titles to purchase.
Time periods in which the project could be supervised:
- Winter Term 2 (January – April)
- Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
Is there a deadline by which the project must be completed?
No deadline
Considering the project requirements, please suggest suitable coursework as pre-requisite or co-requisite:
- LIBR 580 Collection Management
Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.
