Beverly Maureen Becker Memorial Prize

A prize has been made available by family and friends of the late Beverley M. Becker. Ms. Becker was a former student of the iSchool and graduated with her Master of Library Science in 1975.

The award is given for outstanding work in courses related to reference and information services in the iSchool, and is made on the recommendation of the Faculty.

Willard Ireland Prize

A prize has been made available by the Archives Association of British Columbia to honour Willard Ireland, Provincial Librarian and Archivist from 1946 to 1974, and to recognize his outstanding contribution in preserving and interpreting the documents of British Columbia’s and Canada’s past.

The award is given to an outstanding student in Archival Studies in the iSchool. The award is made on the recommendation of the iSchool.

Roy Stokes Medal in Archival Studies (Medal)

This medal honours the second director of UBC iSchool, who initiated the Master of Archival Studies Program. It is offered annually to the graduating student whose record in the MAS program is, in the opinion of the School, most outstanding.

Harold Naugler Memorial Prize

A $1750 prize has been made available through an endowment established by friends and family in memory of Harold Naugler.

The award will be given to a student in the Masters of Archival Studies Program in the iSchool who has achieved excellence in the study of electronic records through academic and research work. The award is made on the recommendation of UBC iSchool, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Friends of the Richmond Archives Mary Keen Memorial Prize in Archival Studies

A prize has been endowed by Friends of the Richmond Archives to a student in the Master of Archival Studies program, with preference given to a student demonstrating an interest in community records. The award is made on the recommendation of the iSchool.

Brock Family Award

Awards totalling $300 have been endowed by the Brock Family and their friends for students graduating with a Masters in Archival Studies from the iSchool who demonstrate leadership in planning, implementing and promoting the preservation, organization and effective use of society’s record information and ideas. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School.

Archives Association of British Columbia Mary Ann Pylypchuk Memorial Prize

A prize donated by the Archives Association of British Columbia, is awarded to an outstanding student in the graduating class of the Master of Archival Studies. The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the iSchool.

Samuel Rothstein Award

A $1,000 award has been established to honour Dr. Samuel Rothstein (BA 39, MA 40, LLD 04) for a graduate student at the iSchool. Dr. Rothstein was the first Director of UBC iSchool who helped the School open the doors in 1961. He led with great imagination, innovation, and foresight. The award is offered to a student who brings the same innovative spirit to their time at the iSchool.

Ronald Jobe Children’s Literature Scholarship

UBC iSchool has established the Ronald Jobe Children’s Literature Scholarship for students in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program.

Dr. Jobe, Professor Emeritus of the Language and Literacy Department, Faculty of Education, was deeply involved in this interdisciplinary children’s literature program jointly offered by the iSchool, LLED, the English Department and the Creative Writing Program. Dr. Jobe established the Children’s Literature Roundtables across Canada , co-ordinated the annual Serendipity conference of the Vancouver Children’s Literature Roundtable, and spent years promoting Canadian children’s literature worldwide, through organizations such as the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), of which he was the first non-European President.

Applications are adjudicated by a committee of faculty in the MA(CL) program, in consultation with the iSchool and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Indicators

  • Academic achievement in courses in literature for children and young adults, taken after enrolling in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program.
  • Contributions to the authorship, scholarship, promotion and dissemination of literature for children.

Terry Eastwood iSchool Award

One award of $1,000 is offered to a student upon completion of the first year Master of Archival Studies Program or Dual MAS/MLIS program in the iSchool who demonstrates scholarly excellence and leadership promise.

Professor Terry Eastwood was the first professor hired to teach in the Master of Archival Studies Program and served as Chair of the Program from 1981 until June 2000. As Interim Director, Chair of Program, teacher and mentor he was a tireless advocate of archival education and as such has been recognized nationally and internationally. Recommendations are made by iSchool in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
