March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 (Tuesdays)
4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Online (via Zoom)
Do you want to build your existing library programming repertoire to be able to apply for a wider range of professional jobs? Do you want to hang out and sing some songs (over Zoom) with some other students and learn a bit more about storytime?
UBC iSchool students are invited to come and learn more about one of the fundamental aspects of Children’s Librarianship in this informal workshop series facilitated by iSchool lecturer, Dr. Tess Prendergast.
Each week will begin with a demonstration of some selected storytime materials followed by time for you to work in small groups to share and practice together. This series will cover the following topics:
- Opening and closing activities
- Songs and rhymes
- Picture books
- Stretches
- Felt/Flannel stories
- Storytime during COVID-19
This workshop series is free and open to all UBC iSchool students. No prior library experience or courses are necessary, just a willingness to learn, participate and share some storytime material together. Please complete the registration form below to receive the meeting link and passcode.
About Dr. Tess Prendergast
Dr. Tess Prendergast is an alumna (Class of ’96) and lecturer at the iSchool, where she teaches courses in the area of librarianship and children’s literature. Prior to coming to the iSchool, Tess worked as a children’s librarian and led storytimes regularly in a large urban public library for over two decades. Dr. Prendergast believes that, like many things, storytime is a skill (as well as an art and a science!) that is best learned from an experienced and encouraging mentor.
