The School of Information is shocked and appalled by the violence at the North Vancouver District Public Library’s Lynn Valley branch library on Saturday. Our faculty, staff, and students stand in solidarity and support with the victims and their families, the library staff and patrons, and neighbouring business workers who experienced this traumatic event and are currently dealing with the emotional aftermath of the attack.
The UBC School of Information community believes in the principle of public library access for all. Libraries are public and open institutions created for the wellbeing of all, and we condemn all acts of violence against them.
Today, as the doors of several North Vancouver Public Library branches reopened, our thoughts are especially with our students and alumni who work in North Vancouver District Public Library, the library’s staff members that teach and guest lecture in our school, and the members of the public who were impacted by this attack.
