Course Highlight: ARST 575J/LIBR 514K IT Security, Information Assurance and Risk Management

Are you looking for another course to take during 2024 Winter Term 2? Consider taking ARST 575J/LIBR 514K IT Security, Information Assurance and Risk Management, taught by Dr. Victoria Lemieux. We recently asked her a couple questions to get to know the course better.

Q: You decided to focus the case studies for this course to be case studies from GLAM institutions this year. Is there a reason why you made this change?

A: Yes, there has been a noted uptick in cyberattacks against GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) institutions, such as the attacks on the British Library, the Internet Archive, and most recently the City of Calgary Library, so it’s important to learn about why these attacks are happening, how to defend against them, and how to recover from them when they do happen.

Q: The course assignments require students to analyze real-life scenarios (incident reports, risk assessments). What do you hope students will gain from this?

A: I hope students will not only gain knowledge of cybersecurity, information assurance and risk management in this course, but real skill in how to conduct a risk assessment and prepare an incident report that will take them into the workplace. Knowledge and skill in cybersecurity not only has the potential to make a job applicant more attractive to a potential GLAM employer, but opens up the opportunity to step into related roles in cybersecurity and risk management as well.

Q: How does this course prepare students for their future as information professionals?

A: The GLAM world has become more digital, and that exposes it to cyber risks more than ever before. In this course, students will be equipped with knowledge about how to protect digital assets – be they digital or digitized records, museum objects, or digital books – and their organization’s sensitive information against cyberattacks.
