Congratulations to alumna Dr. Darra Hofman on receiving the 2021 ALISE Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Competition Award for her doctoral dissertation “‘Between Knowing and Not Knowing’: Privacy, Transparency, and Digital Records“. Dr. Hofman successfully defended her doctoral dissertation last year, in May 2020.
The ALISE jury report highlighted the clarity of writing (“the analysis and findings flow from the research questions and are explained so that even a novice reader could understand it all”), the literary review (“a model of inclusion and explanatory power”), its research questions and methodology, and the dissertation’s topic (“important .. [and] very timely, given the political state of Western, especially North American, governance”).
Dr. Hofman is currently a tenure-track faculty member at the SJSU School of Information. Her research and teaching interests focus on the impact of emerging technologies, such as blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.
Congratulations Dr. Hofman on this well-deserved recognition!
About the ALISE Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Competition Award
Each year, the award recognizes an outstanding dissertation that deals with substantive issues related to library and information science. Dissertations are judged based on the significance of the research problem to the overall LIS field, the presentation of the relevant literature, the design of the study, the conduct of study, analysis and presentation of the data, the appropriateness of conclusions and the clarity and organization of the writing.
