Grant Hurley and Matthew Murray awarded conference funding

Congratulations to Grant Hurley and Matthew Murray, who were awarded conference funding under the programs “Student to ACA” and “Student to CLA”. In support of conference attendance, every year SLAIS provides financial assistance to a student in each of its programs, a travel stipend of up to $500.

Arts Co-op MLIS student profile: Kate Sloan

Kate Sloan, a student in the Master’s of Library and Information Studies Program at the University of British Columbia, says co-op “opened [her] eyes to new opportunities” in her job field. Kate, who worked at the Calgary Public Library (CPL) as a Youth Services Co-op student, was given both a large amount of responsibility and the ability to gain experience in several aspects of CPL’s operations.

2014 UBC iSchool MLIS Co-op Student of the Year

This year’s MLIS Co-op Student of the Year winner, Krystyna Nowak, was honoured for her work term with BGC Engineering, where her supervisor Jocelyn Hallman described her as demonstrating “initiative, creativity, innovation, and leadership”, and even inspiring Jocelyn herself to a “higher standard of librarianship.”

Grant Hurley named 2014 UBC iSchool MAS Co-op Student of the Year

UBC iSchool MAS Co-op Student of the Year has been awarded to Grant Hurley for his work with Teck Resources Limited. Grant took on a wide range of responsibilities, including writing a comprehensive manual of policies, procedures, and guidelines for the Corporate Archives, conducting an inventory of potential archival holdings, and assisting in archival reference for employees, members of the Board of Directors, and public researcher.

2013 Arts Co-op MLIS Student of the Year is Ebony Magnus

This year’s winner, Ebony Magnus, was honoured for her work term at the UBC Library Humanities and Social Sciences Division. Over the course of her two-term co-op assignment, Ebony taught 47 first-year library instruction sessions and saw an opportunity to use data collected during these workshops for an information visualization project required for one of her courses.

Daniel Collins named 2013 MAS iSchool Student of the Year

The 2013 MAS iSchool Student of the Year award goes to Daniel Collins for his work term at the Arts Club Theatre Company. Due to his excellent performance, Daniel has been given a contract to continue working with the Arts Club. Daniel’s supervisor, Vanessa Richards, says his “excellent work … exceeded our expectations to manage the scope of the project.”
