PREREQUISITES:
MLIS and Dual MAS/MLIS: Completion of MLIS Core or permission of the iSchool Graduate Advisor
MAS: completion of MAS core and permission of the iSchool Graduate Advisor
GOAL: The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and appreciation of illustrated books for children and criteria for the selection and evaluation of illustrated books required for the development of a children’s collection and children’s reader’s advisory services.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Discuss the historical development of illustrated books for children
- Demonstrate familiarity with resources, research, and critical theory on illustrated books for children
- Develop and apply criteria for the evaluation of illustrated books
- Discuss the various types, formats, and genres of illustrated books
- Discuss the role of the author, illustrator, art designer, and editor in the creation of a picture book
- Discuss the various media, styles, and techniques of illustration
- Identify and discuss a wide range of significant picture book authors and illustrators
