UBC has committed to three large-scale, long-term initiatives to take action towards reconciliation, address impacts of colonialism and combat systemic racism in higher education: the Indigenous Strategic Plan (September, 2020), the Scarborough Charter (Nov. 2021), and the Anti-Racism Task Force Report (January, 2022). Each of these initiatives addresses unique histories, relationships, and responsibilities. One recommendation they share is the need for those who occupy Canadian post-secondary institutions to engage in difficult conversations around whose knowledge traditions are valued and what types of knowledge are privileged.
Please join us for a conversation that will position us collectively to consider the School of Information’s responsibilities to these initiatives, and the recommendations they bring forward.
We are delighted to welcome a panel of UBC staff and faculty who have insights and experiences to put in dialogue with these three initiatives. We welcome all members of the iSchool community to attend as witnesses to the event, and to bring forward their own aspirations for an information school operating on Musqueam’s occupied territory. How might we move forward to create more welcoming, accountable and respectful spaces for a diverse community of students, staff and faculty?
Snacks too!
