Professor Emeritus Dr. Ronald Albert Hagler taught at UBC School of Information from 1961 to 1999. Dr. Hagler was a deeply respected scholar, educator and mentor who inspired many cohorts of students through his teaching and work in cataloguing, bibliographic control and book history.
Dean Giustini (UBC MLS alum and Biomedical Branch Librarian), remembers Dr. Hagler fondly: “Dr. Hagler set very high standards for his students, many of whom became his friends after going on to careers as librarians and archivists.”
A group of Dr. Hagler’s colleagues and friends are coming together to honour his legacy in the most fitting way they know: by supporting the students who carry his work forward.
“In Honour of Dr. Ronald Albert Hagler: Supporting the Next Generation of Scholars” will support UBC School of Information graduate students working in one of the two fields that Dr. Hagler championed: technical services (bibliographic control, cataloguing, classification, indexing and abstracting), and book history, which explores how printed materials are created, received and understood across cultures and time.
