ARST 595 (3) Internship

The School of Information is presently unable to offer this course. For inquiries, please contact our Educational Services Manager, Kevin Day,  at ischool.edsm@ubc.ca

PREREQUISITES

Students must have completed 24 course credits before undertaking an Internship, which includes the completion of MAS Core plus ARST 520 and 9 additional ARST course credits

OBJECTIVES

  1. To test in a practical setting the knowledge acquired in course work.
  2. To gain experience of the basic functions and activities performed by archivists and/or records personnel.
  3. To accomplish one or more tasks or projects requiring a written product.

This course consists of practical experience and the observation of the professional work of others. It takes place in a recognized archival repository under the supervision of a senior archivist. It offers experience of basic archival functions.

SCHEDULING

Internships take place at the end of Winter Term 1 (from January to March) or at the end of Winter Term 2 (from May to July). It is a 3-month placement (12 weeks) of full-time work with no pay. If you wish to take this course, please fill out the ARST 595 Internship Application Form and submit as instructed on the form to the Educational Services Coordinator at least twelve weeks before you wish to complete the internship. The Coordinator will attempt to arrange a placement for you in an approved repository of your choice.

LOCATION

Placements in a wide range of archival and record repositories and settings are possible provided arrangements can be made for a knowledgeable professional to supervise a regimen, which meets the above objectives. You should not expect remuneration. In some cases, rules and regulations of the repository, including union contracts, may make it impossible to place you in a repository of your first choice. Every effort will be made to place every student who wishes to elect this course but the limited number of satisfactory placements available in the Greater Vancouver area may make it impossible to meet everyone’s wishes.

EVALUATION: Pass/Fail

EXPECTATIONS

Students
Students must complete the Hands on Learning Agreement prior to beginning their placement, and identify an archival faculty member from iSchool willing to co-supervise and assess their work.

At the end of their placement, each intern is asked to submit a report of about 2500 words (10 pages) assessing the Internship as a learning experience to the iSchool faculty co-supervisor. The report should include:

  • an account of the mandate or responsibility of the institution, organization or unit where the intern worked;
  • an account of the activities or projects the intern carried out;
  • and an assessment of how well the intern was prepared by studies in the MAS for each task carried out.

The intern should attach to the report a copy of any written work, such as a finding aid, report, reference letter, etc. Final reports are submitted to the iSchool faculty co-supervisor via email.

Host organizations
Because this course is for credit, the supervising archivist at the host organization is asked to provide a workplan in advance of the student’s arrival, ensuring the breadth of activities required for a placement are planned for over the 12 weeks.

Potential supervisors may review the Internship Guidelines for placement host organizations which outlines what is expected of the hosts, and what you can expect of students.

Our Thanks to the Hosts
UBC iSchool is very grateful to institutions and organizations that take on the task of supervising an intern.
