PREREQUISITES:
MAS/Dual students: Completion of the MAS Core plus 12 ARST credits
MLIS students: Should take LIBR 592
GOAL: ARST 592 provides an opportunity for you to pursue individualized research of less scope and depth than a thesis would demand. It is normally available after you have completed 24 credits with better-than-average standing. If your advis0r feels a regularly offered course impinges on your proposed project, you must take it as a pre- or co-requisite. You are expected to spend 120 hours on the project, the same amount of time on any other course.
OBJECTIVES:
It is up to you to initiate a proposal following these steps:
- Discuss the proposed project initially with the faculty member(s) whose interests are the closest to the topic and with your advisor; as a result, a supervisor for the project will be agreed among you
- Agree with the supervisor on (a) the focus and scope of the project, (b) the appropriate research methodology, (c) a schedule of meeting times with the supervisor, and (d) the scope/content, format, and completion date of all resulting written work
- Prepare in writing, a statement of the proposal in as much detail as you can before beginning it; submit this to your advisor and the supervisor.
When all involved are in agreement, the proposal form will be signed by those involved. Students will be required to submit two copies of the completed form for the Directed Independent Study binder maintained in the office and for the faculty supervisor. Any significant change subsequently suggested by any party must be formally approved in the same way as the original proposal.
