Abstract
In this talk, Visiting Associate Professor of Teaching Dr. Olivier St-Cyr will outline his work and research around building a UX concentration in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. He will first start by explaining how the curriculum was developed for the needs of a professional Master of Information (MI) degree. Dr. St-Cyr will then talk about his research around studio learning and show how he designed and built two learning environments to support the deployment of the UX curriculum. Finally, he will present his research on Community Engaged Learning (CEL), explain why CEL is playing a central role in the UX concentration, and present the results of a CEL pedagogical study they conducted with our UX students and community partners.
Bio
Dr. Olivier St-Cyr is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in the Faculty of Information (iSchool) at the University of Toronto. During the 2022/23 academic year, he is a Visiting Associate Professor of Teaching in the School of Information at the University of British Columbia. Olivier received a BA in Computer Science and Psychology from York University, a MASc in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto. All degrees have a specialty in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
Prior to joining the Faculty of Information, he taught several courses in Computer Programming, User Interface/User Experience Design (UI/UX), and HCI at the University of Toronto, York University, the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University, and Seneca College. He also spent eight years working in the industry on HCI-related projects in organizations such as the University Health Network, IBM, and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited.
His research interests are in the areas of HCI/UX Education, Active Learning (AL) Pedagogy, Active Learning Classroom (ALC) Design, Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) Classrooms Design & Evaluation, Studio Education, and Community-Engaged-Learning (C-E-L).
