Jessica presented “The Archival Trustworthiness of Digital Photographs in Social Media Platforms”

The thesis explored how smartphones and social media sites are transforming photography. Her research examined the impact of new technologies and social practices on the ownership and privacy of personal photographs, as well as the use of social media photographs as legal evidence and archival sources. This research will inform both policy and practice for sharing and storing photographs on social media sites. Her research was supervised by Dr. Luciana Duranti, and the external examiner was Dr. Seamus Ross of The University of Toronto. The other thesis defense committee members were Anthony Sheppard, LLM and Drs. Kellogg Booth, Alfred Hermida and Izak Benbasat.

Elaine presented “Archival Law from the Trenches: The Impact of Archival Legislation on Records Management in Commonwealth Countries”

The thesis addresses how the operationalization of archival legislation in the UK, Canada, and Singapore influences its effectiveness in the implementation of records management programs. The findings of the research suggest that archival legislation operates in the context of a patchwork constituted by other records-related legislation and normative sources, and that there are complexities involved in making amendments to such legislation. The study concludes with recommendations for the decoupling of archival national institutions from national archival legislation, and for a comprehensive regulation of all aspects of records creation, maintenance, and preservation in the public sector. Her research was supervised by Dr. Luciana Duranti, and the external examiner was Dr. Richard Cox of The University of Pittsburgh. The other thesis defense committee members were  Anthony Sheppard, LLM and Drs. Samson Nashon, Gerald Baier and Martin Schulz.

The School would like to extend a thank you to both examination committees.

Congratulations!
