In March 2016 Dr. Lisa Nathan received $4,999 from UBC’s Remote Community Based Learning Fund to bring a group of iSchool students and Kim Lawson (Heiltsuk scholar, Heiltsuk community member, UBC Xwi7xwa reference librarian) to Bella Bella, BC to work with the Heiltsuk Cultural Education Centre (HCEC- http://hcec.ca ). Combined with support from the iSchool, the funds enabled Nathan, Lawson and four iSchool students to travel to Bella Bella in July with a group of undergraduate students from UBC’s First Nations and Endangered Language program led by Professor Mark Turin. Dr. Turin also received a Remote Community Based Learning Fund award. The Remote Community Based Learning Fund enables students to apply discipline-specific skills and knowledge by working in partnership with organizations based in communities outside of the lower mainland to address complex community challenges. Work undertaken by the UBC project teams was directed by the interests and goals of the HCEC.
Thank you to UBC’s Remote Community Based Learning Fund and the iSchool for financial support!
