Purpose of the project:

The UBC Library’s Digitization Centre is investigating the implementation of a transcription platform to allow for the potential of crowdsourcing and class-based transcription projects for handwritten digital objects in Open Collections (https://open.library.ubc.ca/). This project will identify and evaluate potential transcription platforms to support this outcome.

Summary of activities required to carry out the project:

  • Environmental scan on the use of crowdsourcing platforms and processes in academic libraries, and similar environments
  • Identification and investigation of potential platform candidates
  • Tests of identified platforms to evaluate suitability
  • Final report of recommendations, with documentation of process for selected platform (as time allows)

It is expected that the project can be fulfilled largely remotely; some in-person meetings may be required

Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:

At the end of the project the student should have delivered a report with the recommendation of a transcription platform and rationale, as well as documentation of the process (if time allows). Digital Initiatives expects to be able to use this report to facilitate projects for the transcription of handwritten objects in Open Collections.

Time periods in which the project could be supervised:

  • Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
  • Summer Session, Term 2 (July – August)

Is there a deadline by which the project must be completed?

  • The project should be completed by the end of August 2023.

Considering the project requirements, please suggest suitable coursework as pre-requisite or co-requisite:

Required: Completion of the LIBR or ARST core courses
Recommended: LIBR 555/6 (Information Design), 574 (Project Management)

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.
