Purpose of the project:
The purpose of the project is to complete the arrangement and description of a Fonds in the Museum’s collection. The prospective student would gain experience with a real-world collection in a raw or undescribed form and be responsible for arranging and describing it for the Museum’s database.
Summary of activities required to carry out the project:
- Overall review of the material destined for the Fonds
- Understanding other collections at Burnaby Village Museum as context to the Fonds
- Arrangement of the Fonds, Series, File and Item
- Description work done down to each item level, including digitization
- Aiming to complete the Fonds by the end of the placement
Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:
The Museum expects the student to gain valuable experience arranging a large Fonds collected over a long period by many different people and groups. This is a very real-world experience, which will be a very practical grounding to arrangement theory. The student will gain valuable experience with digitizing and storing images.
The Museum will have work completed towards description of undescribed materials in our Collection.
Time periods in which the project could be supervised:
- Winter Term 1 (September – December)
- Winter Term 2 (January – April)
- Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
- Summer Session, Term 2 (July – August)
