About the design

Illustration of Piper Foster

Self-portrait by Piper Foster.

This line of iSchool merch was designed by Piper Foster (she/her), who is currently a first-year student in the Master of Children’s Literature program. We asked Piper a few questions to get to know her better.

What’s your favourite art medium to work in?

My favorite medium to use would probably be graphite pencil because it’s so portable and easy to practice. However when I have more time to exercise creativity, I enjoy pens, colored pencils, and watercolor too!

How did you get into drawing/illustration?

Drawing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and I think being in the children’s literature program has renewed my interest in illustration and the value of this art form for young readers.

What area(s) of children’s literature are you researching/studying in MACL?

While I am unsure exactly what my thesis research will involve, I have had the opportunity to work on a few projects during my time at UBC such as reviewing a historical fiction award and analyzing middle grade novels for ecoconscious material. Looking forward, I would really like to do more research in film and television as visual media has so many fascinating avenues for analysis.
