GOALS: The course is a “hands-on” course to give students practical skills and experience in gathering, analyzing and distributing competitive information.


Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Find facts about private companies, subsidiaries and manufacturers and key personnel within those organizations
  • Gather new market intelligence on products, services and suppliers, especially in the competitive areas of technological changes, market potential and market share
  • Use practical tools and techniques to effectively analyze information gathered including the information audit and the research interview
  • Describe how Canadian and international legislation affects competitive intelligence, including the application of the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
  • Discuss ethical information gathering and techniques to protect against unethical practices
  • Set up and manage a workplace competitive intelligence program
  • Effectively search the Internet for competitive intelligence
