MLIS and Dual MAS/MLIS: Completion of MLIS Core or permission of SLAIS Graduate Advisor
MAS: completion of MAS core and permission of the iSchool Graduate Advisor
GOAL: The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and appreciation of contemporary children’s literature of the last thirty years in print, audiovisual, and electronic format required for the development of a children’s collection and children’s reader’s advisory services.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge of a wide range of varieties, genres, and formats of children’s materials of the last 30 years [1.1, 2.1]*
- Outline the historical development of children’s literature [2.1]*
- Use resources in contemporary children’s literature [2.1]*
- Identify and assess an international selection of authors and illustrators of the last 30 years [4.1]*
- Analyze major developments, trends, and issues in contemporary children’s literature [2.1, 4.1]*
- Demonstrate awareness of intellectual freedom challenges to children’s materials and design professional responses to challenges [1.3, 2.1, 5.1]*
- Demonstrate a professional attitude towards intellectual freedom challenges [1.3, 2.1, 5.1]*
