Purpose of the project:
The Research Commons (RC) at UBC Library supports students and faculty pursuing exploratory scholarship using both new and traditional methods, including in the use of digital tools and technologies. Support for artificial intelligence (AI) research and literacy at academic libraries is relatively under-examined in the literature. At UBC, AI is visible in the work being done by researchers on AI topics, as well as multi-disciplinary digital scholarship projects that use AI-inflected tools. This project will allow a student to contribute to an initial investigation into AI research and literacy support in academic libraries, with the findings of the project helping to inform planning and development of offerings and support at the RC.
Summary of activities required to carry out the project:
The project has a few components and room for alternate tasks depending on student interest.
1) Starting from two identified articles, an environmental scan and lit review of existing and planned library support for AI research, literacy, and education at similar institutions (including a review of both published and non-published materials). Forms of support may include workshops, support for specific tools, outreach and events around AI, AI literacy interventions, etc. 2) Needs assessment activities to help understand the needs of UBC faculty and students. Methods will be determined together with supervising librarians, but could include conversations with faculty and graduate students, surveys, and/or examining course content. 3) Based on the above, review existing RC offerings and support for gaps and opportunities, and provide recommendations. Share recommendations with supervising librarians as well as the larger Research Commons team. |
|
Expectations of the end result of the project, for both host and student:
The student will gain an understanding of the role of libraries in AI support; better understand and articulate academic library services and research needs by learning about UBC Library and the Research Commons services; and gain experience with the work of librarians by performing an environmental scan/lit review and needs assessment activities. The supervising librarians will be able to use the findings to help plan and develop support in this area for the UBC community.
