Luciana Duranti awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Mid-Sweden University

Luciana Duranti Honory Doctorate

On October 11, 2019, Dr. Luciana Duranti received the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Science from the Mid-Sweden University. The ceremony, that includes fanfares, singing, music and a gun salute, took place at the Campus Sundsvall.

Hans-Erik Nilsson, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Media, conferred this honorary degree upon Professor Duranti for her contribution to the modern Archival Science.

Of all her contributions, Nilsson focused on the InterPARES Trust, a multi-national, interdisciplinary research project funded by a SSHRC Partnership Grant and directed by Professor Luciana Duranti.

The InterPARES project explores issues concerning digital records and data entrusted to the Internet. Its goal is to generate theoretical and methodological frameworks to develop local, national and international policies, procedures, regulations, standards and legislation, in order to ensure public trust grounded on evidence of good governance, a strong digital economy, and a persistent digital memory.

We live in a time where proof and fact as concepts are challenged by digitalization. Professor Luciana Duranti uses our profession and discipline to contribute to an increase understanding on what is taking place. In this era, she uses a firm foundation in Archive theory to investigate how we can trust the information found in our records and archives.

‘This honour truly belongs to all InterPARES researchers who at one time or another–as co-investigators, collaborators, research assistants, or all the above–have laboured with me since 1998. We, the InterPARES team, as in a “Field of Dreams,” built a research network where none existed before, and so many came to join it. I thanked Mid Sweden University for recognizing you — all InterPARES researchers, through this honor bestowed on me’, said Dr. Luciana Duranti.

A great honour for the Archival discipline and profession and the iSchool, congratulations Luciana!
