Announcing Winners Of UBC iSchool Co-op Student Of The Year Awards

In December, a subcommittee of our UBC iSchool co-op program advisory committee composed of Anna Jubilo, our Co-op Coordinator for Graduate Programs in the Faculty of Arts, and three UBC iSchool co-op employers met to adjudicate our two UBC iSchool Co-op Student of the Year awards. Each award is worth $1,000 and appears on the student’s transcript.

The awards seek to recognize not only outstanding achievement on a co-op work term, but also the student’s academic accomplishments, service to the co-op community and their professional communities, and the quality of their reflection on the links between their co-op learning and classroom learning.

The MAS – SLAIS Co-op Student of the Year award goes to Grant Hurley (Dual MAS/MLIS student) for his Summer 2014 work term (3rd co-op work term) at Teck in both their Records Management Team and Corporate Library Team. For the RM Team, Grant created an Archives Procedures and Guidelines Manual (Archives Manual). For the Library Team, Grant developed a file structure for the Library’s SharePoint site and organized the information accordingly, participated in news monitoring, evaluated donated books, developed and implemented procedures to manage a substantial cataloguing backlog as well as responded to research requests and participated in the day-to-day activity of the library.

The MLIS – SLAIS Co-op Student of the Year award goes to Krystyna Nowak (Dual MAS/MLIS student) for her S2014 work term (1st co-op work term) as a Student Librarian at BGC Engineering where she provided in-depth research services and completed a redesign and development project.
